Description

Acanthastrea echinata, commonly known as Acan Echinata, is a highly sought-after large-polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its dense skeletal structure, sharply defined corallites, and intense, high-contrast coloration. This species is distinguished by thick ridges and deep valleys that create a dramatic, armored appearance, often displaying vivid combinations of red, orange, green, blue, and metallic highlights that intensify under blue-spectrum lighting. Its compact, aggressive growth form makes it a standout showpiece in LPS-focused reef systems.

Native to Indo-Pacific reef environments, Acanthastrea echinata is known to be more aggressive and slower-growing than other Acanthastrea species, favoring stable conditions and ample spacing.

Lighting: Low to moderate (50–150 PAR); prefers stable lighting—excessive intensity may cause tissue recession or muted coloration
Flow: Low to moderate; gentle, indirect flow supports healthy tissue without damaging fleshy polyps
Placement: Bottom to mid-level areas on rockwork with generous spacing from neighboring corals
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.0265 SG (35 PPT)
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 420–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate; stable nitrate and phosphate levels help maintain coloration and tissue integrity
Feeding: Photosynthetic but responds strongly to regular target feeding with mysis shrimp, reef roids, or finely chopped meaty foods
Aggression: High; extends potent sweeper tentacles—allow substantial clearance from other corals
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; prioritizes tissue density and color development over rapid expansion
Care Level: Intermediate – hardy once established but sensitive to rapid parameter fluctuations
Compatibility: Aggressive; best kept with significant spacing or isolated from delicate LPS and SPS corals
