Native:

Widespread throughout the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, Arabian Gulf, East Africa, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Western Indian Ocean reef systems.

Lighting:

Moderate to high lighting to support natural grazing behavior and algae growth on rocks.

Placement:

Requires plenty of swimming space and strong rock structures with natural algae. Best suited for large aquariums. Minimum tank size: 150–200 gallons (570–750+ liters).

Temperature:

24–28°C (75–82°F)

Salinity:

1.020–1.025 SG

pH:

8.1–8.4

Alkalinity:

8–12 dKH

Diet:

Primarily herbivore. Feed marine algae, nori, spirulina, herbivore pellets, and enriched frozen foods. Will graze on live rock algae throughout the day. Requires frequent feeding to maintain energy levels.

Adult Size:

Up to 45 cm (18 inches)

Care Level:

Moderate – requires a large tank, constant grazing opportunities, and stable water quality.

Compatibility:

Generally peaceful. Suitable with tangs, wrasses, rabbitfish, and other active reef-safe species.

Not ideal for coral-heavy reef tanks—may scrape rock surfaces and occasionally nip at soft corals while grazing. Avoid aggressive tankmates or small timid fish.
