Description

Heterodontus zebra, commonly known as the Zebra Bullhead Shark, is a rare and visually distinctive benthic shark prized for its bold striping, compact build, and prehistoric appearance. This species is characterized by dark vertical bands over a pale cream to tan base, a blunt head, and prominent dorsal spines, giving it a rugged, ancient aesthetic. Its slow, deliberate movement and bottom-dwelling behavior make it a striking focal specimen in very large marine systems designed for elasmobranchs.

This specimen originates from Australia, where the species inhabits rocky reefs and sandy coastal substrates. It is primarily nocturnal, spending daylight hours resting under ledges or within caves before becoming more active at night.

Lighting: Low to moderate; prefers subdued lighting and shaded areas rather than intense reef illumination
Flow: Moderate; adequate circulation and oxygenation without excessive bottom-level turbulence
Placement: Bottom-dwelling; requires expansive sand areas and stable rock structures for shelter
Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Diet: Carnivorous; accepts squid, shrimp, fish, clams, and other meaty marine foods—hard-shelled items are important for maintaining tooth health
Aggression: Generally peaceful toward similarly sized fish; predatory toward small fish and mobile invertebrates
Adult Size: Up to 120 cm
Care Level: Advanced – requires extremely large, purpose-built aquariums with strong filtration and stable water quality
Compatibility: Not reef-safe; best suited to species-only or large predator systems with carefully selected tank mates
