Description

Zebra Tang – Acanthurus polyzona

Acanthurus polyzona, commonly known as the Zebra Tang or Black-Barred Surgeonfish, is a striking and uncommon tang species recognized for its alternating vertical black and white bands and sleek, torpedo-shaped body. Native to the Western Indian Ocean, it inhabits surge zones and reef slopes where it grazes continuously on filamentous algae. Though modest in coloration compared to its Indo-Pacific cousins, its rarity, precision striping, and distinctive profile make it a highly desirable specimen for serious tang enthusiasts and collectors.

Origin: Western Indian Ocean – Mauritius, Réunion, and Madagascar
Depth: 5–30 m (15–100 ft)
Lighting: Moderate to high (encourages natural grazing behavior and enhances contrast)
Flow: Strong, turbulent flow preferred; mimics natural surge habitat
Tank Placement: Open swimming areas with live rock for algae growth and grazing
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
Salinity: 1.022–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Diet: Herbivorous – grazes on filamentous algae, nori, and marine-based vegetable preparations supplemented with spirulina and enriched greens
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; territorial toward other tangs, especially within the Acanthurus genus
Size: Up to 18 cm (7 inches)
Care Level: Intermediate to advanced – requires ample swimming space and frequent feeding to maintain health and coloration
Compatibility: Best housed singly in large aquariums (minimum 500 L / 130 gal); compatible with most non-aggressive species

Collector’s Note: Acanthurus polyzona is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade, with most specimens sourced from Mauritius or Réunion. Its limited geographic range and sporadic availability make it a coveted addition to Collector’s Corner lineups — a true gem for tang specialists seeking regional exclusivity and authenticity.
