Bimaculatus Anthias – Pseudanthias bimaculatus

Pseudanthias bimaculatus, known as the Bimaculatus Anthias or Two-Spot Anthias, is a striking midwater species admired for its vivid sexual dimorphism. Males display brilliant magenta and yellow coloration accented by two distinct dark spots—one on the dorsal fin and another near the tail base—while females are more subtly shaded in peach and rose hues. Native to deeper reef slopes, this species brings dynamic motion and color to large, established reef aquariums.

Origin: Western Pacific Ocean – notably around the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea
Lighting: Moderate to low (prefers softer illumination reflective of deeper reef zones)
Flow: Moderate to strong, with steady laminar current
Tank Placement: Midwater; enjoys open swimming areas with rock ledges for retreat
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
Salinity: 1.022–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Diet: Carnivorous planktivore – requires frequent feedings of small meaty items such as copepods, mysis shrimp, and enriched frozen planktonic foods
Temperament: Peaceful; best maintained singly or in a harem structure (one male with several females)
Size: Up to 13 cm (5 inches)
Care Level: Advanced – sensitive to nutrient fluctuations and requires consistent feeding regimen
Compatibility: Ideal for serene reef communities; avoid aggressive tankmates and ensure stable, high-oxygen environments
