Description
Emperor Angelfish - Centropyge loriculus
A large, striking marine angelfish known for its dramatic color transformation. Juveniles display deep blue bodies with white circular stripes, while adults develop bold horizontal yellow and blue stripes with a dark facial mask and yellow tail. A true showpiece fish for large marine aquariums.
Native: Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, East Africa, Maldives, Indonesia, Australia, and surrounding reef systems.
Lighting: Moderate to high reef lighting (standard marine lighting; no special requirements).
Placement: Main display area with plenty of open swimming space and large live rock structures for grazing and shelter. Best suited for large tanks (minimum 180 gallons / 680+ liters).
Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Diet: Omnivore. Requires a varied diet including marine angelfish preparations (sponge-based foods), spirulina, marine algae, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality pellets. Frequent feeding recommended.
Adult Size Up To: 40 cm (16 inches)
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced (due to size, diet needs, and potential aggression)
Compatible With: Large tangs, triggers (reef-safe species), larger wrasses, groupers, and other semi-aggressive fish.
May nip at corals, clams, and some invertebrates — not considered fully reef-safe. Avoid housing with small, timid fish or other large angelfish unless tank size is very large.
