Description
Maxi Mini Carpet Anemone – Stichodactyla tapetum
Stichodactyla tapetum, known as the Maxi Mini Carpet Anemone, is a vibrant, compact species revered for its bold coloration and dynamic texture. Displaying a dazzling array of colors—from electric greens and fiery oranges to rainbow morphs—it features a densely packed oral disc with fine tentacles that give it a plush, carpet-like appearance. Despite its small size, it brings the visual impact of a full-sized carpet anemone to nano and mid-sized reef aquariums. Hardy, photosynthetic, and relatively stationary once settled, the Maxi Mini is both a collector’s favorite and an ideal showpiece for aquascapes needing a burst of color and motion.
Lighting: Moderate to high (120–200 PAR); vivid coloration and contrast are enhanced under blue-dominant LEDs
Flow: Moderate; prefers gentle, variable flow that allows subtle tentacle movement without lifting its foot
Placement: Bottom to mid-level on stable rock or substrate; secure firmly in a crevice or depression to ensure proper attachment
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 400–440 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.10 ppm); balanced nutrients maintain health and vibrant coloration
Feeding: Photosynthetic but benefits from weekly feeding with small meaty items such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or chopped seafood
Aggression: Moderate; possesses a sticky, mildly stinging surface—keep distance from sensitive corals and avoid direct contact with other anemones
Growth Rate: Moderate; expands steadily under consistent light and feeding conditions
Care Level: Intermediate – easy to maintain once established but requires secure footing and stable parameters
Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; suitable for mixed reefs with caution—avoid proximity to delicate LPS or SPS species due to its sticky tentacles
