Description
Rhodactis sp., commonly known as the Magic Carpet Mushroom, is a highly textured and visually dramatic mushroom coral prized for its thick, rippled surface and bold presence. Unlike smoother Discosoma mushrooms, Magic Carpet Mushrooms feature a dense, shaggy oral disc with pronounced folds and surface structure, giving them a plush, carpet-like appearance. When fully expanded, they create a strong focal point and add depth and contrast to reef aquariums.
Native to Indo-Pacific reef environments, Rhodactis mushrooms are hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for a wide range of aquarium setups, from mixed reefs to soft coral–dominant systems.
Lighting: Low to moderate; performs best under subdued to moderate reef lighting—excessive intensity may cause contraction
Flow: Low; gentle, indirect flow is preferred—strong flow can prevent full expansion
Placement: Bottom to lower-mid areas on rockwork or isolated rubble to control spreading
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.0265 SG (35 PPT)
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 380–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate; tolerates elevated nutrients better than many stony corals
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; may benefit from occasional target or broadcast feeding of fine meaty foods or reef blends
Aggression: Moderate; capable of overgrowing nearby corals and may sting slow-moving neighbors
Growth Rate: Moderate; spreads via natural division under favorable conditions
Care Level: Easy – hardy and forgiving, suitable for most established reef aquariums
Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; best given space from sensitive corals to prevent encroachment
