Description

Jawbreaker – Discosoma spp.

Discosoma spp., known in the reefing world as the Jawbreaker, is one of the most coveted and visually arresting mushroom corallimorphs ever discovered. It displays a molten, lava-like coloration — a deep base of fiery orange marbled with yellow, red, and occasionally green or purple as it matures. Each specimen is completely unique, with color patterns developing over time, making it as much a collector’s piece as it is a coral. Hardy, adaptable, and stunningly fluorescent, the Jawbreaker thrives in stable, nutrient-rich reef environments with gentle flow and moderate light.

Lighting: Low to moderate (50–120 PAR); excessive light can cause color fading, while subdued blue-spectrum illumination enhances fluorescence and marbling contrast
Flow: Low; prefers gentle, indirect flow that allows for full expansion and prevents tissue lifting
Placement: Bottom to mid-level on rock islands or shaded areas; secure placement is essential as it may detach and move in search of ideal light and flow
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 400–440 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate to elevated (NO₃ 10–20 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.15 ppm); slightly nutrient-rich water supports vivid coloration and steady propagation
Feeding: Photosynthetic but benefits from occasional feeding with fine particulate foods, coral roids, or dissolved organics; minimal direct feeding required
Aggression: Low; generally peaceful but may overgrow neighboring corals if left unchecked
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; multiplies through pedal laceration or fission under stable conditions
Care Level: Easy – hardy and tolerant, ideal for both beginner and advanced reef keepers
Compatibility: Peaceful; best suited for mixed reefs and mushroom gardens; avoid close contact with stony corals to prevent encroachment
