Description

Fungia – Fungia spp.

Fungia spp., commonly known simply as the Fungia or “Plate Coral,” is a free-living large-polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its circular, radiating structure and vibrant coloration. Found on sandy reef flats and lower slopes, it ranges in color from electric orange and green to purple and rainbow morphs. Unlike most corals, Fungia lives unattached to rockwork, allowing it to inflate and move slowly across the substrate. Its resilience, movement, and vivid coloration make it a standout coral for both novice and advanced reef keepers.

Lighting: Moderate to high (80–180 PAR); intense blue-spectrum lighting enhances fluorescence and surface iridescence
Flow: Low to moderate; prefers gentle, indirect flow that prevents sand buildup but avoids tissue stress
Placement: Bottom of the aquarium on sand or flat rock surface; ensure the coral can expand fully without abrasion or obstruction
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 420–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.10 ppm); stability promotes growth and recovery from stress
Feeding: Photosynthetic but benefits from occasional feeding with mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, or reef roids; target feed once weekly to encourage growth and regeneration
Aggression: Moderate; capable of mild stings if in contact but generally peaceful when given space
Growth Rate: Moderate; develops concentric skeletal ridges and can reproduce via budding of “baby plates” from its base
Care Level: Easy to intermediate – hardy and adaptable when provided stable conditions
Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal for sandbed placement in mixed reefs, though avoid direct proximity to aggressive LPS or moving invertebrates
