Description

Favia – Favia spp.

Favia spp., commonly known as Favia or “Closed Brain,” are classic large-polyp stony (LPS) corals recognized for their intricate honeycomb structure and radiant coloration. Each corallite forms a distinct circular pattern, creating a mesmerizing geometric texture across the colony. Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, Favia colonies display rich greens, reds, purples, and metallic highlights under blue-spectrum lighting. Hardy and adaptable, they are an ideal choice for aquarists seeking structure, durability, and color in a mixed reef system.

Lighting: Moderate (80–150 PAR); maintains best color under balanced blue-spectrum LEDs with gradual acclimation to intensity
Flow: Moderate; prefers indirect, consistent flow that prevents detritus buildup while allowing full polyp extension
Placement: Middle to lower regions of the aquarium on stable rockwork; avoid direct exposure to powerheads or aggressive neighbors
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 420–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.10 ppm); stability and trace element balance enhance tissue thickness and color vibrancy
Feeding: Photosynthetic but benefits from target feeding 1–2 times weekly with mysis shrimp, coral pellets, or fine planktonic foods; feeding supports skeletal density and polyp expansion
Aggression: Moderate to high; extends short sweeper tentacles capable of stinging adjacent corals within a few centimeters
Growth Rate: Moderate; develops thick, encrusting ridges that form domed colonies over time
Care Level: Intermediate – hardy once established but sensitive to rapid changes in alkalinity or lighting intensity
Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; best positioned with other LPS corals, allowing adequate spacing to prevent tissue contact
