Description

Lobophyllia – Lobophyllia hemprichii

Lobophyllia hemprichii, commonly known as the Lobophyllia or “Lobo,” is a large-polyp stony (LPS) coral admired for its thick fleshy tissue, sculpted ridges, and brilliant coloration. Found on reef slopes and lagoonal substrates, this coral forms meandering colonies with bold folds and contrasting hues—ranging from rich reds and oranges to neon greens, purples, and multicolor morphs. Its dramatic texture and flowing polyp movement make it an impressive centerpiece in any LPS-dominated reef display.

Lighting: Low to moderate (50–150 PAR); colors intensify under blue-spectrum LEDs with subdued intensity
Flow: Low to moderate; prefers gentle, indirect flow to prevent tissue recession or tearing
Placement: Bottom to middle regions of the aquarium on sand or flat rock surfaces; avoid placement on sharp edges or in direct jet flow
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 420–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate nutrient environment (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.10 ppm) promotes healthy tissue thickness and coloration
Feeding: Photosynthetic but benefits from target feeding 1–2 times weekly with mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, or coral-specific LPS pellets; feeding enhances expansion and growth
Aggression: High; extends long, potent sweeper tentacles at night capable of damaging nearby corals—maintain 15–20 cm spacing
Growth Rate: Moderate; expands steadily under stable parameters and consistent nutrition
Care Level: Intermediate – hardy but sensitive to parameter swings and aggressive neighbors
Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; best placed among other LPS corals with suitable spacing to prevent contact; compatible with peaceful reef fish and invertebrates
