Description
Seriatopora hystrix – Seriatopora hystrix
Seriatopora hystrix, commonly known as the Birdsnest Coral, is a fast-growing small-polyp stony (SPS) coral recognized for its fine, delicate branching structure and intense coloration. Available in hues ranging from neon green and pink to the highly sought-after orange and purple morphs, S. hystrix creates intricate, tree-like colonies that provide exceptional texture and movement to SPS reef aquariums. Its slender branches and glowing polyps make it a cornerstone species for aquarists seeking vibrant color and dynamic form.
Lighting: Moderate to high (180–300 PAR); coloration and polyp fluorescence peak under blue-heavy LED or hybrid T5/LED systems
Flow: Moderate to strong; thrives in multidirectional, turbulent flow that prevents detritus accumulation and encourages compact branching
Placement: Middle to upper regions of the aquarium; ensure open space for outward branch development and avoid shading from larger SPS colonies
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH; stable alkalinity critical for healthy growth and maintaining branch integrity
Calcium: 420–460 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Low to moderate (NO₃ 2–10 ppm, PO₄ 0.02–0.08 ppm); slightly elevated nutrients help sustain color saturation without promoting algae
Feeding: Photosynthetic but benefits from occasional broadcast feeding with fine coral plankton or amino acid supplements
Aggression: Low; non-stinging but can outcompete slower encrusting SPS through rapid growth
Growth Rate: Fast; develops dense, upward-branching colonies that fill space quickly under stable conditions
Care Level: Intermediate – relatively hardy for an SPS coral but sensitive to parameter fluctuations or excessive shading
Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent for SPS-dominated reefs and contrasts beautifully with encrusting Montipora and branching Acropora species
