Description
Micromussa – Micromussa amakusensis
Micromussa amakusensis, commonly known simply as the Micromussa, is a compact and vividly colored large-polyp stony (LPS) coral closely related to Micromussa lordhowensis and Acanthastrea species. It forms dense encrusting or mound-like colonies of small, fleshy polyps that display brilliant hues of red, orange, teal, and metallic green. Micromussa thrives in stable reef systems and is prized for its resilience, color intensity, and adaptability to varied lighting and nutrient conditions.
Lighting: Low to moderate (50–120 PAR); excessive intensity may cause polyp retraction or fading—best coloration achieved under balanced blue-spectrum LEDs
Flow: Low to moderate; gentle, indirect flow allows full polyp inflation and prevents detritus buildup
Placement: Bottom to mid-level of the aquarium on stable rockwork or sand; avoid direct current or shaded crevices that limit feeding access
Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–11 dKH
Calcium: 420–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.12 ppm); prefers a nutrient-rich yet stable environment for consistent coloration
Feeding: Photosynthetic but benefits from target feeding 2–3 times per week with mysis shrimp, LPS pellets, or coral-specific microfoods; feeding enhances color saturation and growth
Aggression: Moderate; extends short sweeper tentacles capable of stinging nearby corals if in close proximity
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast; expands rapidly under stable parameters and consistent feeding
Care Level: Easy to intermediate – highly adaptable and forgiving, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists
Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; best placed with other LPS or soft corals, maintaining a few centimeters of clearance between colonies
