Description

Scolymia vitiensis – Scolymia vitiensis

Scolymia vitiensis, commonly known simply as the Scolymia, is one of the most coveted and visually stunning large-polyp stony (LPS) corals in the hobby. Originating from the Indo-Pacific and Fiji regions, this coral features a single, fleshy polyp with a perfectly round structure and intensely layered coloration. Each specimen is truly unique—ranging from deep emeralds and scarlets to ultra-grade “Rainbow” morphs featuring radiant orange, blue, and green bands that glow vividly under actinic and blue-spectrum lighting. S. vitiensis combines elegance, resilience, and collector appeal, making it a centerpiece coral in high-end reef displays.

Lighting: Low to moderate (60–150 PAR); blue-heavy LED lighting enhances its fluorescence and color separation—avoid excessive light intensity to prevent tissue retraction
Flow: Low to moderate; prefers gentle, indirect flow to maintain full polyp inflation and avoid irritation
Placement: Bottom region on soft sand or smooth rockwork; ensure stable footing and avoid sharp substrate that may damage the coral’s base
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 420–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.10 ppm); balanced nutrient levels preserve tissue thickness and enhance fluorescence
Feeding: Photosynthetic but thrives with direct feeding 1–2 times weekly using mysis shrimp, reef roids, or small meaty foods to maintain fullness and color intensity
Aggression: Moderate; extends short sweeper tentacles—allow 10–15 cm spacing from other corals
Growth Rate: Slow; focuses on color development and tissue expansion rather than skeletal growth
Care Level: Intermediate – hardy once settled but sensitive to rapid parameter shifts or excessive flow
Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; ideal as a sandbed showpiece in mixed or LPS-dominant reefs with ample spacing
