Description

Torch – Euphyllia glabrescens

Euphyllia glabrescens, commonly known as the Torch or “Torch Euphyllia,” is one of the most striking and dynamic large-polyp stony (LPS) corals in the reef aquarium trade. Recognized for its long, flowing tentacles tipped with glowing ends of gold, green, purple, or orange, it adds unmatched movement and brilliance to reef displays. Each polyp resembles a flickering flame, creating a dramatic visual under blue-spectrum lighting. Native to lagoon slopes and reef crests across the Indo-Pacific, the Torch is a resilient yet assertive coral that commands attention.

Lighting: Moderate to high (100–200 PAR); strong blue-spectrum illumination enhances fluorescence and metallic sheen
Flow: Moderate; prefers indirect, rhythmic water movement that allows tentacles to sway naturally—avoid direct, forceful current
Placement: Middle regions of the aquarium on open rockwork with ample clearance for tentacle extension
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 420–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate nutrient conditions (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.10 ppm); thrives in stable, mature reef environments
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic but benefits from weekly target feeding of mysis shrimp, LPS pellets, or fine marine meaty foods for enhanced growth and polyp extension
Aggression: Very high; extends long sweeper tentacles capable of delivering potent stings—maintain at least 15–20 cm spacing from all other corals
Growth Rate: Moderate; grows steadily under stable alkalinity and nutrient balance
Care Level: Intermediate – requires consistent water quality and careful placement to avoid aggression issues
Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; best housed near other Euphyllia species (Hammer, Frogspawn) with adequate spacing, and away from delicate LPS or soft corals
