Description
ORA Neon Birdsnest – Seriatopora hystrix
Seriatopora hystrix, known as the ORA Neon Birdsnest, is a vibrant, fast-growing small-polyp stony (SPS) coral renowned for its electric yellow-green coloration and fine, delicate branching structure. Cultivated by ORA (Oceans, Reefs & Aquariums), this aquacultured strain exhibits exceptional adaptability, intense fluorescence under actinic and blue-spectrum lighting, and dense, bushy growth that adds striking contrast and texture to any SPS reefscape. Its refined branch geometry and radiant color make it one of the most popular and resilient Birdsnest varieties available.
Lighting: Moderate to high (150–300 PAR); develops its brightest neon coloration under strong blue and UV LED channels
Flow: Moderate to strong; requires multidirectional flow to maintain branch health and prevent detritus buildup
Placement: Middle to upper regions of the aquarium with open water movement; avoid shading from larger SPS colonies
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH; stable levels are critical to avoid tip burn and maintain consistent growth
Calcium: 420–460 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Low to moderate (NO₃ 2–10 ppm, PO₄ 0.02–0.08 ppm); slightly elevated nutrient levels enhance coloration and tissue thickness
Feeding: Photosynthetic but benefits from occasional broadcast feeding of microplankton or amino acids to boost polyp extension and coloration
Aggression: Low; lacks sweepers but may overgrow nearby slow-growing SPS if not spaced properly
Growth Rate: Fast; forms dense, intricate branching colonies with a delicate, feathery appearance
Care Level: Intermediate – tolerant and fast-growing, ideal for aquarists building SPS-dominant systems
Compatibility: Peaceful; best placed among other SPS corals with adequate spacing for outward branch development
