Description

Stylocoeniella is a distinctive small-polyp stony (SPS) coral valued for its compact growth form and textured surface. Unlike branching SPS, Stylocoeniella grows as an encrusting to low-profile mound, with tightly packed corallites that create a rugged, almost stippled appearance. Coloration typically ranges from muted greens and browns to brighter tones under optimal conditions, making it an excellent contrast coral in SPS-dominated or mixed reef systems.

Native to Indo-Pacific reef environments, Stylocoeniella is often overlooked but appreciated by experienced reef keepers for its resilience and unique morphology.

Lighting: Moderate to high (200–350 PAR); maintains best coloration and growth under stable, high-quality reef lighting
Flow: Moderate to high; benefits from consistent, indirect flow to keep the surface free of detritus
Placement: Mid to upper areas of the aquarium on rockwork with room for encrusting expansion
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH (stability is critical)
Calcium: 420–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Low to moderate; excessive nutrients may reduce color definition
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; benefits indirectly from broadcast feeding of fine particulate foods and amino acids
Aggression: Low; non-aggressive but sensitive to encroachment by faster-growing corals
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; encrusting growth emphasizes texture rather than size
Care Level: Advanced – requires stable parameters, strong lighting, and consistent maintenance
Compatibility: Peaceful; well suited for SPS-dominant or carefully planned mixed reef aquariums
