Description

Holacanthus passer, commonly known as the Passer Angelfish, is a commanding and highly sought-after large angelfish distinguished by its bold coloration, dominant presence, and unmistakable attitude. This species features a deep midnight-blue to near-black body contrasted by a vivid vertical white bar behind the head, paired with electric blue highlights along the fins and face. Mature specimens develop an even more intense contrast and presence, making them a true centerpiece in large marine systems.

Native to the Eastern Pacific, particularly along the coasts of Mexico and Central America, the Passer Angelfish is a high-energy, territorial species that thrives in expansive aquariums with substantial rockwork. Its intelligence, responsiveness, and assertive behavior elevate it beyond standard display fish into true showpiece territory.

What separates premium specimens is the sharpness of the white bar, the depth of the blue-black body coloration, and the overall body condition—thick, well-fed individuals with clean finnage command significantly higher desirability among serious collectors.

Collector’s Note:
Large, well-established Passer Angelfish with strong contrast and flawless finnage are considered top-tier display specimens. Their combination of bold patterning, personality, and presence makes them a defining fish in high-end predator and fish-only systems.
