Description

Acropora millepora is a highly sought-after SPS coral known for its dense, bushy branching structure and vibrant coloration. It can develop exceptional combinations of red, orange, pink, yellow, green, blue, and purple depending on the specific morph and aquarium conditions. Under strong blue LED lighting, many specimens display intense fluorescent coloration and contrasting branch tips.

Its compact branching growth creates a beautiful reef centerpiece and provides excellent texture and depth in an SPS-dominated aquarium. Like most Acropora, it requires stable water chemistry, strong lighting, excellent flow, and a mature reef system.

Lighting

High lighting

PAR: 250–450

Requires strong, consistent lighting for optimal coloration and growth. Acclimate gradually when moving the coral into higher PAR.

Placement (Aquarium Zone)

Upper to middle reef

Best placed on stable rockwork with excellent light penetration and strong multidirectional flow.

Leave sufficient space around the colony as it branches and expands. Avoid placing it directly beneath aggressive LPS or anemones.

Temperature

24–27°C (75–81°F)

Salinity

1.025–1.026 SG

pH

8.1–8.4

Alkalinity

7–9 dKH

Stable alkalinity is particularly important for SPS growth and coloration.

Calcium

420–450 ppm

Magnesium

1280–1380 ppm

Flow

Strong, turbulent, indirect flow

Acropora millepora benefits from vigorous, randomized flow that keeps detritus from settling between branches.

Avoid a constant, narrow jet directly hitting the colony.

Diet

Primarily Photosynthetic + Supplemental Feeding

The majority of its energy comes from symbiotic zooxanthellae, but supplemental feeding can support growth and overall health.

Foods:

Phytoplankton

Zooplankton

Reef-specific coral foods

Amino acid supplements

Fine particulate marine foods

Reef plankton preparations

Feed sparingly, particularly in heavily stocked SPS systems.

Adult Size (up to)

Approximately 15–30+ cm (6–12+ inches)

Large established colonies can grow considerably wider depending on the morph and aquarium conditions.

Growth Rate

Moderate to fast under stable SPS conditions.

Care Level

Advanced
