Description
The Maxima Giant Clam (Tridacna maxima) is one of the most highly prized giant clams in the reef aquarium hobby, known for its brilliant mantle colors, intricate patterns, and intense iridescence. Coloration can range from electric blue, turquoise, green, gold, purple, and bronze, often with contrasting spots, lines, or metallic patterns. Under blue reef lighting, its reflective mantle can produce an exceptional fluorescent appearance. It is a photosynthetic clam that requires strong, stable lighting and excellent water quality.
Lighting
Moderate to high lighting
PAR: 150–350
Placement (Aquarium Zone)
Middle to upper reef
Preferably placed on a stable rock or solid substrate where the clam can securely attach its byssal foot. Allow the mantle to expand without touching neighboring corals.
Temperature
24–27°C (75–81°F)
Salinity
1.024–1.026 SG
pH
8.1–8.4
Alkalinity
8–10 dKH
Calcium
420–450 ppm
Magnesium
1280–1380 ppm
Flow
Moderate, indirect flow
Avoid strong direct flow that causes the mantle to remain retracted.
Diet
Primarily Photosynthetic
Supplemental foods:
Phytoplankton
Fine particulate coral foods
Marine microplankton
Reef plankton preparations
Healthy established clams obtain most of their energy from their symbiotic zooxanthellae.
Adult Size (up to)
Approximately 30–40 cm (12–16 inches)
Care Level
Intermediate to Advanced
