Description
Entacmaea quadricolor, commonly known as the Bubble Tip Anemone (BTA), is one of the most popular and visually dynamic anemones in the reef hobby. Its signature bulbous tentacle tips and vibrant coloration—ranging from classic green to rose, rainbow, inferno, and other ultra-grade morphs—make it a standout centerpiece in both mixed reefs and dedicated anemone systems. Highly interactive, BTAs often form symbiotic relationships with clownfish species such as Amphiprion ocellaris and A. percula, bringing natural behavior and movement into the aquarium. Stable conditions reward aquarists with full inflation, glowing fluorescence, and the potential for the anemone to clone through fission.
Lighting: Moderate to high (150–250 PAR); blue-dominant LED and hybrid lighting bring out maximum fluorescence and bubble formation
Flow: Moderate; prefers alternating, indirect flow that allows gentle tentacle motion without causing detachment
Placement: Middle to upper regions of the aquarium; place on solid rockwork with crevices for the foot to anchor—expect movement until it finds its ideal location
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 400–440 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.10 ppm); stable nutrients support strong coloration and tissue health
Feeding: Photosynthetic but benefits from weekly feedings of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or finely chopped seafood—feeding encourages growth and potential splitting
Aggression: Moderate; possesses strong nematocysts—avoid contact with sensitive LPS, SPS, or other anemones
Growth Rate: Moderate; expands well under consistent conditions and may reproduce through fission
Care Level: Intermediate – hardy once established but requires stable parameters and careful initial placement
Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; highly compatible with clownfish but must be given space to prevent stinging interactions with corals
