Description
Platygyra spp., commonly known as the Maze Brain, is a classic large-polyp stony (LPS) coral admired for its intricate, winding skeletal patterns that resemble a natural maze. The coral forms thick, fleshy ridges separated by deep valleys, creating strong texture and depth within the reefscape. Coloration varies widely and may include shades of green, brown, red, purple, or mixed tones with contrasting valleys and ridges that fluoresce beautifully under blue-spectrum lighting. Hardy and visually striking, Maze Brains are long-standing favorites in mixed and LPS-dominated reef aquariums.
Origin: Maldives (Indian Ocean)
Depth: 3–30 m (10–100 ft)
Lighting: Low to moderate; excessive light may cause tissue recession
Flow: Low to moderate; prefers gentle, indirect flow to prevent irritation of fleshy tissue
Tank Placement: Bottom to mid-level on stable rockwork or substrate
Temperature: 75–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Diet: Photosynthetic but benefits from periodic feeding of mysis shrimp, reef roids, or finely chopped meaty foods to support tissue growth and coloration
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; extends short sweeper tentacles, especially at night
Size: Colonies can exceed 30 cm (12 inches) over time
Care Level: Easy to intermediate – hardy and tolerant of minor parameter fluctuations
Compatibility: Reef-safe; compatible with most corals when given adequate spacing; avoid placing near delicate SPS or highly aggressive LPS
