Description

Green Montipora – Montipora capricornis

Montipora capricornis, known as the Green Montipora, is a classic plating small-polyp stony (SPS) coral admired for its brilliant green coloration, smooth texture, and elegant, scroll-like growth form. As it matures, the coral develops layered, whorling plates that create depth and movement within the reef structure. Under blue-spectrum lighting, its intense fluorescence and defined edges make it one of the most visually rewarding and hardy SPS corals available—ideal for aquarists seeking both beauty and structural impact.

Lighting: Moderate to high (180–300 PAR); displays optimal green fluorescence under blue-dominant LED or hybrid T5/LED systems
Flow: Moderate to strong; prefers turbulent, multidirectional flow that prevents detritus accumulation on plate surfaces
Placement: Middle to upper regions of the aquarium with open horizontal space for plating expansion; avoid shaded areas or close proximity to aggressive neighbors
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH; must remain stable for consistent growth and coloration
Calcium: 420–460 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Low to moderate (NO₃ 2–10 ppm, PO₄ 0.02–0.08 ppm); trace nutrient presence promotes healthy tissue and color depth
Feeding: Photosynthetic but benefits from broadcast feeding with reef plankton or amino acid supplements 1–2 times per week
Aggression: Low; non-stinging, though it can overgrow adjacent encrusting species if space is limited
Growth Rate: Fast; forms broad, spiraling plates under stable conditions and regular nutrient availability
Care Level: Intermediate – requires consistent parameters and moderate-to-strong lighting but is highly resilient once established
Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent for SPS-dominated systems, providing architectural balance and contrast against branching corals
