Description
Montipora setosa – Montipora setosa
Montipora setosa, is a collector-favorite small-polyp stony (SPS) coral celebrated for its vibrant orange to deep coral-red coloration and smooth, sculptural growth form. Unlike other Montipora species that encrust or plate, Setosa develops thick, bulbous branches and undulating lobes that create a striking, three-dimensional structure. Under blue-spectrum lighting, its fluorescence is remarkable—glowing with a fiery intensity that makes it one of the most eye-catching SPS corals in any reef display.
Lighting: Moderate to high (180–300 PAR); coloration intensifies under blue-heavy LED or hybrid lighting while avoiding bleaching under excessive intensity
Flow: Moderate to strong; thrives in alternating flow that promotes polyp extension and prevents detritus accumulation in recessed areas
Placement: Middle to upper regions of the aquarium; allow space for its dense, rounded growth and avoid shading from overhanging colonies
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH; stability is essential for healthy tip growth and coloration
Calcium: 420–460 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Low to moderate (NO₃ 2–10 ppm, PO₄ 0.02–0.08 ppm); slightly elevated nutrients help maintain tissue richness and prevent paling
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; benefits from occasional broadcast feeding with amino acids or fine coral foods to support growth and pigmentation
Aggression: Low; non-stinging but may overgrow nearby encrusting species if placed too close
Growth Rate: Moderate; slower than plating Montipora, forming thick, contoured lobes under stable conditions
Care Level: Intermediate – hardy once established but sensitive to parameter swings and shading
Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal for SPS-dominated systems where it contrasts beautifully against greens and blues from Acropora and other Montipora varieties
