Description
Favia, are classic large-polyp stony (LPS) corals revered for their striking skeletal patterns, vivid coloration, and hardy nature. Each colony is composed of distinct, closely spaced corallites—giving Favia its signature honeycomb appearance. Coloration ranges widely from deep greens and reds to ultra-grade morphs featuring neon mouths, contrasting ridges, and intense fluorescence under actinic lighting. Easy to care for yet visually impactful, Favia adds texture, depth, and bold color to any reef aquarium, making it a staple for both beginner and advanced reef keepers.
Lighting: Low to moderate (60–150 PAR); enhanced fluorescence and defined corallite structure under blue-heavy LED lighting
Flow: Low to moderate; prefers gentle, indirect water movement to maintain polyp extension without irritating its fleshy ridges
Placement: Bottom to mid-level on stable rock or substrate; allow modest space for polyp sweepers
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 420–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.10 ppm); stable nutrient levels maintain bright tissue coloration
Feeding: Photosynthetic but benefits from 1–2 weekly feedings of mysis shrimp, reef roids, or fine LPS foods to promote growth and mouth inflation
Aggression: Moderate; extends short sweeper tentacles—keep some distance from sensitive neighbors
Growth Rate: Moderate; forms rounded, encrusting or dome-shaped colonies over time
Care Level: Easy – durable and adaptable, suitable for all experience levels
Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; pairs well with other LPS such as Acanthastrea, Lobophyllia, and Favites with appropriate spacing
