Description

Rhinopias frondosa, commonly known as the Weedy Scorpionfish, is one of the most iconic and sought-after ambush predators in the marine aquarium world. Instantly recognizable by its elaborate, leaf-like appendages and exaggerated “weedy” profile, this species represents the pinnacle of natural camouflage. Its body is adorned with flowing dermal filaments that mimic drifting algae or reef debris, while coloration ranges across deep reds, purples, yellows, and mottled tones, often shifting subtly over time to match its surroundings.

Collected in extremely limited numbers from select Indo-Pacific regions, Rhinopias frondosa is a true collector’s specimen reserved for advanced aquarists. Its appeal lies not in movement, but in presence—remaining motionless for extended periods before executing rapid, precise feeding strikes. Each individual is visually unique, with structure, appendage density, and coloration determining its desirability at the highest levels of the trade.

Premium specimens are defined by full body mass, dense and well-formed appendages, intact finnage, and—critically—a strong feeding response. Individuals already accepting frozen foods represent the highest tier of acquisition due to their significantly improved long-term viability.

Collector’s Note:
Rhinopias frondosa is distinguished from R. eschmeyeri by its heavier “weedy” appendages and more exaggerated, frilled appearance. High-grade specimens with dense, symmetrical growth and rich coloration are exceptionally rare and form the cornerstone of serious predator or specialty displays.

Lighting: Low to moderate; prefers subdued lighting that complements its natural camouflage

Salinity: 1.0265 SG (35 PPT)
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Diet: Carnivorous; feeds on shrimp, small fish, and other meaty foods—specimens trained to frozen are significantly more valuable
Aggression: Predatory; will consume any tank mate small enough to be ingested
Adult Size: Up to 23 cm
Care Level: Advanced – requires specialized feeding, careful handling, and stable conditions
Compatibility: Not reef-safe; best suited for species-specific or high-end predator systems with carefully selected tank mates
