Blastomussa Coral – Blastomussa wellsi

Blastomussa wellsi, commonly known simply as the Blastomussa Coral or “Blasto,” is a highly sought-after large-polyp stony (LPS) coral admired for its striking, fleshy polyps and vivid coloration. Found in a wide range of morphs from deep reds and greens to rainbow variants, Blastomussa colonies form beautiful, rounded heads that expand dramatically under proper lighting and flow. Peaceful and hardy, it thrives in stable reef systems and makes an excellent feature coral for mixed aquariums.

Lighting: Low to moderate (50–150 PAR); excessive intensity may cause tissue retraction or fading
Flow: Low to moderate; prefers indirect, gentle flow to maintain full polyp extension
Placement: Bottom to mid-level on stable rockwork or sand substrate; avoid direct exposure to strong current or intense light
Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–11 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate nutrient levels preferred (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.15 ppm); overly clean systems may inhibit growth
Feeding: Readily accepts meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, LPS pellets, and finely chopped seafood; target feeding enhances growth and coloration
Aggression: Low; short sweeper tentacles, but requires space from neighboring corals to prevent contact
Growth Rate: Moderate; expands steadily under stable alkalinity and nutrient conditions
Care Level: Easy to intermediate – ideal for hobbyists seeking a colorful, low-maintenance LPS coral
Compatibility: Peaceful and reef-safe; best placed with other gentle LPS or soft corals in areas with minimal competition
