Description
Trachyphyllia – Trachyphyllia geoffroyi
Trachyphyllia geoffroyi, commonly known as the Trachyphyllia or “Open Brain,” is a classic large-polyp stony (LPS) coral revered for its striking color combinations and fleshy, lobed structure. Found in lagoonal sand flats and lower reef slopes, it displays brilliant metallic hues—ranging from neon green and crimson to rainbow patterns that shimmer under blue-spectrum lighting. Its gentle pulsation and soft expansion make it a centerpiece coral in many reef aquariums, where it thrives under moderate light and flow.
Lighting: Low to moderate (50–150 PAR); best coloration achieved under moderate blue-spectrum LEDs with gentle shading from intense light
Flow: Low to moderate; prefers indirect, oscillating flow that allows its fleshy mantle to inflate fully without irritation
Placement: Bottom of the aquarium on sand or smooth rock surface; avoid sharp edges or rubble that may damage tissue
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 420–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.10 ppm); balanced nutrient levels enhance tissue fullness and color intensity
Feeding: Photosynthetic but thrives with weekly target feeding of mysis shrimp, LPS pellets, or reef roids; feeding encourages recovery, growth, and color vibrancy
Aggression: Moderate; short sweeper tentacles can sting nearby corals if placed too close—maintain 10–15 cm spacing
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; develops large, meandering ridges and folds as it matures
Care Level: Intermediate – hardy once established, but sensitive to handling and parameter fluctuations
Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal for sandbed placement among other LPS species, provided adequate space to prevent tissue contact
