Description
Branching Hammer – Euphyllia paraancora
Euphyllia parancora, commonly known as the Branching Hammer or “Anchor Hammer,” is one of the most iconic and sought-after LPS corals. Recognized by its distinctive hammer- or anchor-shaped tentacle tips, it displays mesmerizing motion and vibrant coloration—typically shades of green, gold, or purple that glow vividly under actinic lighting. Its branching skeleton allows for easier propagation and spacing than wall-type hammers, making it a staple feature coral in both mixed and dedicated Euphyllia gardens.
Lighting: Moderate (80–150 PAR); performs best under blue-spectrum LEDs that enhance fluorescence and polyp expansion
Flow: Moderate; prefers indirect, oscillating flow that keeps tentacles in gentle motion without causing retraction or tissue tearing
Placement: Middle regions of the aquarium with adequate space for full extension; avoid strong direct current and sharp rockwork
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 420–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Moderate (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.05–0.10 ppm); stability is key to prevent tissue recession
Feeding: Photosynthetic but benefits from occasional feeding with mysis shrimp, reef roids, or small LPS pellets once or twice weekly
Aggression: High; extends long sweeper tentacles capable of stinging nearby corals, especially at night—maintain 15 cm clearance
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast; branches readily under stable conditions, making it suitable for controlled propagation
Care Level: Intermediate – requires stable alkalinity and gentle flow, but highly rewarding once established
Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; best placed near other Euphyllia species such as Frogspawn or Torch, ensuring space between colonies to prevent contact
