Description
Grafted Millipora – Acropora millepora
Acropora millepora, known in the hobby as the Grafted Millipora, is an exceptionally rare and visually stunning strain of Acropora that exhibits two or more contrasting color pigments—typically vibrant greens and deep pinks or reds—interwoven within the same colony. This “grafted” appearance occurs when distinct color morphs fuse at the skeletal level, creating marbled growth tips and kaleidoscopic polyps. Beyond its rarity, A. millepora is valued for its dense, fuzzy polyp extension and dynamic movement, bringing texture and depth to high-energy SPS reef systems.
Lighting: High (250–400 PAR); achieves optimal coloration and graft contrast under blue-heavy spectrum lighting such as LED/T5 hybrids or full-spectrum reef LEDs
Flow: Strong and multidirectional; thrives in turbulent, alternating currents that enhance polyp extension and prevent detritus accumulation
Placement: Upper to middle regions of the aquarium; provide open space for outward branching and avoid shading from neighboring SPS
Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH (stability critical—fluctuations may cause base recession or tip burn)
Calcium: 420–460 ppm
Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
Nutrients: Low to moderate (NO₃ 2–10 ppm, PO₄ 0.02–0.08 ppm); slightly nutrient-rich systems enhance color blending and tissue health
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; benefits from weekly broadcast feeding with microplankton, reef roids, or amino acid supplements to promote growth and color saturation
Aggression: Low; lacks long sweeper tentacles but may overgrow nearby SPS colonies if crowded
Growth Rate: Fast; forms compact, bushy colonies with thick, vividly colored branches and fuzzy polyps in constant motion
Care Level: Advanced – requires high light, strong flow, and long-term parameter stability to preserve graft integrity and coloration
Compatibility: Peaceful; best placed among other SPS species with adequate spacing to accommodate outward growth
